Position Description

Machine Shop Helper

The Machine Shop Helper assists CNC Operators by performing duties such as cleaning work areas and equipment; moving parts and materials; and assisting with machine set-up as well as other support functions.

Essential Duties

1. The Helper monitors chip hoppers and other trash bins to ensure they are emptied and keep in good working order. He/she cleans and sweeps work areas to maintain a clean and safe environment.

2. The Shop Helper performs minor maintenance services such as: ensuring that coolant and lubrication levels are maintained; lubricates and cleans parts, assemblies and equipment; and ensure scheduled maintenance is performed.

3. The Machine Shop Helper lifts or transports raw materials, finished products and packed items; stores material with identifying information in designated stage racks or as instructed; and maintains an accurate inventory of parts and material. He/she stages raw material for use.

4. He/she assists with the operation of machinery used in the production process, as instructed including: feeding, loading, or removing parts from machine; examining parts and materials for defects and filing, trimming, sawing, buffing, drilling, and deburring parts using hand tools or power tools. The Helper verifies completed work is within tolerance limits as stated in the specifications.

5. The Helper observes equipment operations so that malfunctions can be detected and production goals can be met; he/she notifies CNC Operators of any malfunctions.

6. The position is responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules, including wearing required personal safety equipment; and for interacting with team members and other departments in a professional manner.

7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Environment and Physical Activity

The environment for this position is an open production area that may be subject weather conditions including extreme heat – temperatures can potentially rise to 100 degrees or more for periods of more than one hour; noise that is sufficient to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level; hazards including working close to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, exposure to chemicals and working at elevated levels. The worker may be subject to fumes, odors, dusts or mists.

In the course of performing the duties of the position the worker spends time speaking, listening, lifting (up to 85 pounds), carrying, sitting, pulling, pushing, walking, squatting, kneeling, reaching and standing for prolonged periods.

Hazards including sharp metal chips, abrasive dust, sharp cutting tools, revolving machine parts, electrical currents, exposure to chemicals and skin irritation from oil or coolants. The worker may be subject to fumes, odors, dusts or mists.

Safety awareness and compliance with safety regulations is vital. Workers must wear special safety equipment such as masks and gloves.

This position may be required to operate any or all of the following: general office equipment including copy

and fax machines, calculator, personal computer and related printers. He/she must be able to stand for prolonged periods.

Mental Demands

The incumbent in this position must be able to: read and write, interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals; perform simple mathematic calculations including add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; perform analytical reasoning, handle multiple, concurrent tasks and interact professionally with clients and staff.

Position Requirements

These specifications are general guidelines based on the minimum experience normally considered essential to the satisfactory performance of this position. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform the position in a satisfactory manner. Individual abilities may result in some deviation from these guidelines.

 High School Diploma or graduation from certified technical school and a minimum of 1 year of experience in a manufacturing environment.

 Must be able to read, follow direction, use simple math to perform basic calculations, and use basic hand held measuring tools.

 Must be able to frequently lift/push/pull objects that are 85 pounds or heavier.

 Basic knowledge and application of precision measuring instruments and the application of such instruments. Instruments should include but not limited to calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gages, indicators and scales.

 Basic knowledge of reading drawings and specifications with a basic understanding of geometric tolerances and dimensions. Must possess basic math skills to include but not limited to adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, geometry and algebra for the purpose of calculating material fabrication.

 Basic knowledge of tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, inserts and other accessories used on various machines.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
